Minoru Sew-Along: Week One

January 22, 2012

This winter I’m sewing along with Tasia at Sewaholic.net. A bunch of other talented seamsters and I are all making her Minoru jacket pattern, and here’s a reflection on my efforts to sew well.

I’m on a boat.

No, seriously, I’m writing while on a ferry to a little island off the coast of California to celebrate life with friends. I’m trying the whole post-by-iPhone thing, so please forgive any broken links.

One week into the Minoru Sew-Along, and I’m staying on pace. Day one: cut the fabric. Check. I even managed to cut with enough fabric to spare to include the hood!

Day two: attach the sleeves. Check. I top stitched before trimming the seam allowances as an excuse to use my appliqué scissors.

Day three: sew the neckline gathering stitches. Check. I added a third line of stitches since I like the look of the gathering in this Colette Patterns tutorial.

Day four: make the hood. Check. I even lined my hood with the same Bemberg lining I’m using for the inside of the jacket. I sewed the curved seam down the back of the hood for both the shell and lining, and then I basted the two wrong sides together. Finally, I hemmed the front of the hood per the original directions, folding half an inch in twice and edge stitching. I liked the little bit of facing this method created.

Now back to the boat. Happy Sunday all!

I think if I was to run into you on the street wearing that jacket (not knowing you of course), I’d probably wind up stalking you for a good ten minutes. Inspired pairing!
