Tuesdays with Gertie: A Lining with Structure… and Dragons
This year I’m sewing along with Gertie from Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing. A bunch of other talented seamsters and I have joined up through the Craftsy online community to make perfectly fitted bombshell dresses. Here’s a reflection on my efforts to sew well.
This week’s bombshell dress video lesson was all about adding spiral steel boning to the lining. After watching the video last summer, I used the lessons to add boning to the sides and back of my Lonsdale bodice since I wanted it to be a halter and not rely on the ties for support. Back then I’d purchased one continuous length of spiral steel boning and cut it to the lengths that I needed. I had more than enough left over for this dress as well.
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to know that there will be dragons hiding in my dress. I also can’t tell you how happy I am that there are only two more weeks left in this course. I’m so close to having a finished bombshell dress!

Thanks! It screamed “Pick me!” when I was browsing through cottons that would pair with my turquoise-y blue silk that I’m using for the dress’s exterior. The color of the dragons is a perfect match!
OMG this lining! I love it. Also, out of curiosity, where did you get your length of continuous spiral steel?
Thanks! It was a while ago, but I’m pretty sure I ordered the length of spiral steel plus 100 or so caps from Corset Making Supplies.

What a beautiful lining! I have also joined to this course, but now I can’t find the time to start. I’ll have to make as you and choose a day to dedicate. Seeing your progress makes me want to start now.

I almost got you some as a gift the last time I was in the store where I picked this up, but I hesitated since I wasn’t sure how you’d really use it. The dragons are much too big for your cute little wallets… If you can imagine using it, let me know. I owe you a million birthday and Christmas presents!
I love this lining so much! I almost wish it was the self fabric. My favorite part is the knight who looks like he’s holding up your left boob. So funny!

Awesome lining. Although, I don’t think I could’ve put it on the inside. No, I would’ve needed a dragons dress.

Out of curiosity, how did using the boning in the Lonsdale work? I have plans to make one this summer (once I can get my schedule enough under control that I can sew regularly again), and I’ve been strongly considering doing that myself–ideally, I’d like to build something more bra-like into it.
The boning in the Lonsdale works great. I didn’t want to worry with the long ties, so I added bones to the side seams and just off from the zipper in the back. I posted a picture of it here. The back of the dress stays put, and I don’t notice it at all. And, the strips of Japanese cotton that I used for the channels seems to be holding up well.
